Association between leucocyte telomere length and cardiovascular disease in a large general population in the United States

Abstract: Leucocyte telomere length (LTL) has been reported to be linked to ageing, cancer and cardiovascular disease (cVD). this study aimed to explore the association between LtL and cVD risk in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. Complex associations, including nonlinearity and interaction, were also examined. A total of 7,378 subjects from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2002 were collected. Telomere length was detected from DNA samples and expressed as the mean t/S … Show more

“…The reduced regenerative capacity or turnover of healthy cells in this state can result in mitochondrial dysfunction and DNA damage, further adding to the vicious cycle of inflammation and disease onset [ 31 , 38 ]. Studies investigating telomere length (TL) in human tissues [ 42 ], animal models [ 43 ] and cell cultures [ 44 ] have shown associations between shorter TL and various types of inflammatory and CVDs [ 45 ]. This information may be critical in determining clinical presenting symptoms as well as cellular symptoms of CVD and associated complications such as endothelial dysfunction.…”

“…Cardiovascular morbidities had been correlated with the leukocyte telomere length. The shorter leukocyte telomere length was related with cardiovascular disease events [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Telomeres are nucleoprotein complexes located at the ends of chromosome, and they are critical in maintaining genome stability by preventing DNA damage and degradation 1 . Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) has been suggested as a marker for biological aging 2 and is associated with risks of chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases, 3 type 2 diabetes 4 and hypertension 5 . Moreover, the shortening of telomeres may be exacerbated by inflammation 6 and oxidative stress, 7 which play important roles in the pathogenesis of metabolic conditions.…”
