Association between low lean mass and low bone mineral density in 653 women with hip fracture: does the definition of low lean mass matter?

Abstract: The association between low aLM and low BMD in women with hip fracture dramatically depends on the adopted definition of low aLM. FNIH threshold for aLM (<15.02 kg) emerges as a useful tool to capture women with damage of the muscle-bone unit.

“…Skeletal muscle is a significant but not the only component of lean body mass (LBM) or fat free mass (FFM). In a large number of clinical trials, lean mass (or FFM) is incorrectly referred to as muscle mass. We will discuss how the use of FFM as a surrogate for muscle mass has resulted in erroneous conclusions on the importance of skeletal muscle in development of late‐life dysfunction and risk of chronic disease.…”

“…Our findings also seem to contradict the "bone-muscle unit" model, 23 suggesting that the crosstalk between bone and skeletal muscle may be impaired in late life. In a recent study by Di Monaco et al, 24 the association between sarcopenia and osteoporosis largely varied depending on the definition and index adopted to describe low LBM. The variability of the different indices of sarcopenia to capture concomitant disproportions in body compartments between groups needs to be further tested in larger cohorts.…”

“…У пациентов с нарушением обоих тканевых компонентов костно-мышечного аппарата, поступивших в реабилитационный центр с переломом бедра, диагностирована низкая МПК, которая положительно коррелирует с низкой безжировой массой конечностей (БМК). Как и ожидалось, у пациентов с переломом бедра распространены как саркопения, так и остеопороз [32][33][34]. В 2014 г. Ассоциация национальных институтов здравоохранения США (Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, FNIH) опубликовала новые пороговые значения клинически значимой низкой массы нежировых тканей [35].…”
