Association between mean platelet volume and hypertension incidence

Abstract: Mean platelet volume (MPV) is increased in various cardiovascular diseases. We sought to determine the prognostic value of MPV for hypertension. We performed a retrospective cohort study. Baseline characteristics were measured in 9168 individuals without hypertension, and the follow-up period was 9 years. Hypertension was confirmed in 2881 participants during the followup period. When the participants were grouped according to MPV quartiles, the hazard ratio of future hypertension gradually increased across th… Show more

“…In this study Diabetics hypertensive dyslipidemics and overweight (BMI>25) cases had significantly raised values of MPV and PDW. The findings were in line with studies conducted by Gang L et al, 16 Kodiatte TA 17 and Khemka R. 18 There was no significant difference in MPV, PDW according to gender, smoking and alcoholism. MPV & PDW were higher in patients aged more than 60 years of age compared to those less than 60 years of age.…”

“…Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, and smoking habits are among the most important medical pre-conditions and stroke-related comorbidities. Several lines of evidence from the literature suggest that a direct correlation exists between MPV and these traditional cerebrovascular risk factors [55][56][57][58][59][60]. MPV was significantly higher (0.65 fL) in individuals with coronary artery disease and patients with high MPV had 17% higher chance of having cardiovascular events compared to patients with low MPV [61].…”

“…Mean platelet volume (MPV), an easily and inexpensive parameter derived from routine blood counts, is usually used to evaluate platelet morphology and can be used as an indicator of platelet activity [ 7 ]. Elevated MPV has been demonstrated to be related to cardiovascular diseases and its risk factors such as T2DM, hypertension, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) [ 8 11 ]. Recently, a substantial number of studies measured MPV levels in women with GDM to evaluate whether it can be used as an indicator to monitor and assess the development of GDM.…”
