Association between periodontitis and metabolic syndrome: A case‐control study

Abstract: BackgroundOver the past few years, the association between metabolic disorders and periodontitis has been widely studied and recognized. However, the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and periodontitis remains controversial. The aim of the present case‐control (1:3) study is to evaluate the potential association between periodontitis and MetS, as well as the influence of risk variables on this association.MethodsSamples comprised 122 individuals with MetS (cases) and 366 controls. Plaque index, pr… Show more

“…A study including 8314 participants found an OR = 1.4 ( p < 0.05) for the association between periodontal disease and MetS [ 63 ]. A case-control study recently published found that patients with MetS presented worse periodontal status and higher prevalence, severity, and extension of periodontitis [ 64 ]. Dental caries, a component of TDI, has also been associated with MetS among the middle-aged urban Chinese population [ 65 ], and a recent study found an association between decayed teeth and MetS [ 66 ].…”

“…Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined as the combination of three out of five of the following interrelated conditions: increased plasma glucose, hypertension, dyslipidemia (elevated triglycerides and low levels of high-density lipoprotein [HDL]), and/or elevated abdominal circumference. [ 1 ] Abdominal obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia are the most frequently occurring components of MetS. [ 2 ] MetS is multifactorial disorder, also known by other names such as Reaven’s syndrome, insulin resistance syndrome, plurimetabolic syndrome, syndrome X, and the deadly quartet.…”
