Association between plasma homocysteine levels and cognitive deficits in Han Chinese patients with schizophrenia across age groups

Abstract: It was still unclear how homocysteine (Hcy) levels and cognitive deficits change in patients with schizophrenia of various ages. The present article attempts to assess the relationship between Hcy levels and cognitive deficits in patients with schizophrenia across age groups, especially in young people. Totals of 103 patients and 122 healthy controls were included. All participants were stratified into four groups according to their age: 18–29 years, 30–39 years, 40–49 years, and 50–59 years. Clinical data, pl… Show more

“…Interestingly, the SZ, ATPD, ME, and MD groups did not show signi cant intergroup differences in Hcy levels in the omnibus analysis, suggesting that the psychopathophysiologies of these disorders share common neural substrates. Our results showed signi cantly higher serum Hcy levels in patients with SZ, ATPD, ME, and MD, in overall agreement with previous studies [5,6,19,23,24], but prior evidence for the involvement of Hcy in acute and transient psychotic disorders is poor. However, the majority of previous studies [6, 19,23,25] have shown that Hcy levels are elevated in patients with SZ.…”

“…A Mendelian randomisation study also showed that elevated plasma homocysteine levels could increase the risk of schizophrenia ( 15 ). Folate deficiency and hyperhomocysteinemia appears to be more specifically associated with negative symptoms and cognitive alterations in this population ( 16 ).…”

“…Moreover, a randomized controlled trial found that plasma Hcy levels decreased significantly after risperidone treatment and PANSS scores decreased significantly in patients with SCZ ( 9 ), suggesting that high Hcy levels may be related to the pathogenesis of SCZ and clinical psychopathology. Besides, an increasing body of evidence suggests increased plasma Hcy levels are associated with an increased prevalence of more severe cognitive impairment in SCZ ( 10 ), MDD ( 11 ), and BD ( 12 ). Moreover, previous clinical trial suggested that serum Hcy levels were significantly decreased in patients with SCZ after risperidone treatment ( 9 ).…”
