Association between race and physical functioning limitations among breast cancer survivors

Abstract: Findings from this study showed that African-American breast cancer survivors were more likely to have worse physical functioning limitations than their white counterparts; however, much of this disparity was due to racial differences in other variables such as BMI. Future research should focus on effective interventions targeting modifiable risk factors of physical functioning limitations among breast cancer survivors with the goal of improving quality of life.

“…Patients were mailed a survey on long-term health outcomes (including cardiovascular disease, sleep issues, and physical functioning) among cancer survivors in June 2008 and again to nonrespondents in November 2009. The survey was designed to help develop institution-specific programs for cancer survivors as well as to better understand the role of patient characteristics and cancer treatments on long-term health, including that related to cardiovascular health and physical functioning [911]. The survey took approximately 20 minutes to complete, and consent was implied by return of the questionnaire.…”

“…The Spirituality Self-Rating Scale assessed spirituality with a continuous scale produced by summing six individual Likert scale items, with a possible score range of 6–30 [14], with higher values indicating greater spirituality. Physical function was measured by calculating a summary score (range 0–32) for the 12-item limitation of functional activity component of the Adult Health Status and Limitation of Activity section from the National Health Interview Survey [11]. The summary score was then categorized into “no limitation” and three tertile-based categories (low, intermediate, and high limitation scores).…”

“…[11, 3032] Some have shown no differences in upper extremity function by race[30] or full mediation by BMI,[32] while others did not report findings specific to upper body functioning by race,[11] or did not exclusively focus on breast cancer. [31] Often, prior studies did not use validated scales to measure UED, nor account for co-morbid conditions, such as obesity, that might affect functioning.…”

“…African American breast cancer survivors have been found to be at greater risk for experiencing significant functional impairments than White breast cancer survivors [30]. Investigators surveying survivors who had been seen at a Baltimore hospital concluded that this disparity was associated with fewer years of education and more comorbidities.…”
