Association Between Red Blood Cells Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and White Matter Hyperintensities: The MAPT Study

Abstract: We did not find any association between omega-3 PUFAs and WMH in non-demented older adults with memory complaints. A longer longitudinal study with data on omega-3 PUFAs and WMH would contribute important information to this field.

“…In the present study, we found that the deformation of CA1 region was more significant during the transformation of MCI to AD, which was consistent with the previous studies 29 . In addition, interestingly, we found the deformation of the left hippocampus was more extensive than that of the right hippocampus, which was consistent with the previous studies 67,68 . Foley revealed that the onset of left hippocampus atrophy was earlier than that of the right hippocampus in 272 young healthy adults with higher polygenic risk scores.…”

“…Freund-Levi et al 14 found, via subgroup analysis, that decline rate was slower in the treatment group, but only among those with the mildest AD symptoms. Moon et al 15 studied a similar population, but did not identify any positive effect of omega-3 supplementation.…”

“…Similarly, Tu et al 22 reported that after feeding α-linolenic acid to weanling rats, the erythrocyte omega-3 index correlated positively with that of most other tissues, but not the brain. Some epidemiologic studies also showed no correlation between erythrocyte index and depression 39 or white matter hyperintensity 40 . Many experimental studies in animals, on the other hand, have reported a positive correlation between erythrocyte omega-3 index and that of the brain, but the range of brain DHA values achieved in these studies was narrow, since TAG-omega-3, which does not efficiently enrich brain omega-3, was used for feeding 19,22,41 .…”
