Association between serum levels of minerals and premature hair graying: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

HIV-EF and FM in our case series. 4 The nature of mucin in FM is unknown. Many diseases related to FM show an infiltrate with lymphocytes and eosinophils. Our patients presented a striking number of both cell types within the pilosebaceous unit (Fig. 1). Therefore, we suggest that these cells could be implicated in mucin overexpression. Clinical presentation and the absence of atypical folliculotropic or epidermotropic T lymphocytes made us rule out the possibility of a folliculotropic mycosis fungoides. 5 The relationship between HIV and mucin deposits has been reported with increasing frequency. 1-3 The stimulation of fibroblasts by direct HIV infection or by upregulated cytokines such as interleukin 1, interleukin 6, or TNF may play a role. 6 We present the largest series of FM in HIV-EF patients and suggest that HIV-EF should be added to the list of conditions in which FM may be found. We consider that FM may represent a reaction pattern, possibly favored by HIV infection.
