Association between the Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index and Executive Function in Community-Dwelling Elderly People

Abstract: Aim:The aim of this study was to investigate the cross-sectional association between arterial stiffness (AS) measured with the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and executive function in communitydwelling elderly people. Methods: Subjects were 140 community-dwelling elderly people who participated in the study at Kobe, Japan during the period of August-September 2014, of which 126 (mean age SD: 73.2 6.1, female: 67.5%) met the inclusion criteria and completed the study. Age, sex, body mass index, global cogni… Show more

“…A series of studies have found that CAVI as a new marker of vascular health was closely related to arterial injury in patients with hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and blood lipid disorder and became a useful tool for health screening because of the blood pressure dependence [3035]. In addition, higher CAVI was also associated with lower executive function in older adults [36], and CAVI was also an effective predictor of cardiovascular events in obese patients [37]. In addition, a new classification of vascular health has regarded CAVI as an important evaluation index of vessel in clinical practice [38].…”

“…An improvement in these risk factors decreased CAVI. In the Journal of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis , CAVI was reported to be a predictor for cardiovascular events, independent of traditional coronary risk factors in 1562 outpatients with metabolic disorders 7 ) and to be associated with the executive function assessing letter word fluency test in140 community-dwelling elderly individuals 8 ) .…”
