Association between the Vicious Cycle of Diabetes-Associated Complications and Glycemic Control among the Elderly: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Background and objectives: Improved quality of life (QoL) and life expectancy of elderly diabetic patients revolves around optimal glycemic control. Inadequate glycemic control may lead to the development of diabetes-associated complications (DAC), which not only complicate the disease, but also affect morbidity and mortality. Based on the available literature, the aim was to elucidate the vicious cycle underpinning the relationship between diabetes complications and glycemic control. Materials and Methods: A … Show more

“…The probable reason for these differences could be the deranged metabolism of the lipids and carbohydrates among such patients. The T2DM is a metabolically complex situation, varied findings have been mentioned by Fung et al 30 Our study provides a comparison of a multimorbid population of SA. Our study cohort belonged to SA and many neighboring countries having quite varied living setups.…”

“…Another systematic review showed that being overweight or obese resulted in fewer points in the main domains of HRQoL [4], in line with our results. Next to this, hyperglycemia was shown to have direct and indirect effects through inadequate glycemic control on HRQoL outcomes in diabetic elderly [54]. Intervention plans to promote lifestyle changes prevented frailty in diabetic individuals and enhanced life expectancy and HRQoL [55].…”

“…This increases their risk of both hypo- and hyperglycemia, which are also factors that lead to polypharmacy in advanced age [11]. Poor self-care directly influences elderly patients’ ability to achieve glycemic control, since it renders the patients unable to appropriately self-manage their disease [12].…”
