Association mapping of drought tolerance indices in wheat: QTL-rich regions on chromosome 4A

Abstract: Drought is likely the main abiotic stress that affects wheat yield. The identification of drought-tolerant genotypes represents an effective way of dealing with the continuous decrease in water resources as well as the increase in world population. The aim of this study was to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) associated with drought tolerance indices in wheat by using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) under fully irrigated and rain-fed conditions. The drought tolerance indices (i.e., Stress … Show more

“…Both single marker and haplotype-based GWAS revealed the association of Y on chromosome 4A in both the years under irrigated and drought conditions (Figure 1.b-e, percentage variation explained as large as 41% in some studies [34]. The present and previous studies therefore suggest an important role of 4A chromosome in drought adaptation in wheat.…”

“…The marker Xgwm299 on 3B in association with QMP_S2.NIAB-3B.1 and QST_S2.NIAB-3B co-locates with Phr, Sw and Sps QTLs. Furthermore, the same marker is linked with Tkw [51] and Phr at late growing stages [40] in other studies. Furthermore, the interval of QDRI_S1.NIAB-5B (Xwmc28-Xgwm1072) is linked with HI, spike HI and spike number QTLs in durum wheat [52].…”

“…Farmers have reported an 83% increase in the frequency of droughts in the central zone of Chile, which has had a significant impact on agricultural production [ 6 ]. Therefore, plant species that can tolerate environments with low water availability must be studied [ 7 ].…”
