Association of 10-Year Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Score with Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and Plaque

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this study was to determine the association between carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and newly developed 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score.MethodsParticipants were 201 Korean adults who underwent carotid ultrasonography at the Health Promotion Center of the Eulji General Hospital. We obtained information about medical history and lifestyle, and conducted laboratory tests. Carotid IMT by B-mode ultrasonography was measured. Carotid injury was considered p… Show more

“…The Mediators of Atherosclerosis study of South Asians living in America (MASALA) clinical cohort of 849 South Asian adults between 40–75 years old living in San Francisco Bay and greater Chicago showed good agreement between the ASCVD risk score and cIMT. Similarly, in a Korean cohort of 201 adults, high risk classification by ASCVD correlated with high CVD risk classification by cIMT [ 20 ]. However, this agreement has not been consistent across studies.…”

“…Given these mixed data on performance of CVD risk prediction rules across different HIV-infected populations, surrogate CVD end points such as carotid atherosclerosis as assessed by carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) have been used as an alternate approach to estimate risk of CVD [ 16 , 17 ] with a cIMT cut-off of ≥75 th percentile indicating high CVD risk [ 18 ]. Importantly, cIMT has been used as a surrogate CVD endpoint to assess the new ASCVD risk score performance in new populations without their own validated CVD risk prediction scores [ 19 , 20 ]. The use of cIMT as a surrogate CVD end-point is of particular interest in an African HIV-infected patient population because cIMT is a stronger predictor of stroke than myocardial infarction [ 21 ] and HIV-infected patients in SSA experience strokes more frequently than myocardial infarctions [ 5 , 22 24 ].…”

“…Previous studies indicated high carotid IMT or carotid plaque to be a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease [4][5][6] . Since the new ASCVD risk calculator was developed, two recent analysis of large Asian subjects have demonstrated that carotid IMT correlated with the new 10-year ASCVD risk score 9,31) . In agreement with those studies, in the present study 10-year ASCVD risk was positively corelated with cIMT and carotid atherosclerosis.…”

“…The soluble endoglin concentration in serum cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events (defined as first occurrence of nonfatal myocardial infarction or coronary heart disease death, or fatal or nonfatal stroke) in 2013 8) . Until now, the association of 10-year ASCVD risk with carotid subclinical atherosclerosis has been well demonstrated 9) . However, whether potential novel markers could improve the utility and accuracy of ASCVD risk assessment is still under exploration.…”

“…Carotid intima‐media thickness (IMT) is a surrogate measure of atherosclerosis disease . Thus, measuring IMT is generally accepted as an early assessment method of subclinical atherosclerosis . Numerous epidemiologic studies have shown that IMT is also predictive of CVD .…”
