Association of Alcohol Drinking Patterns with Metabolic Syndrome and Its Components in Korean Adults: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016–2018

Abstract: This study examined the association of alcohol drinking patterns with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in a nationally representative sample of South Korean adults. The cross-sectional study included 12,830 current drinkers (6438 men and 6392 women) who were at least 20 years old. Measures of alcohol drinking patterns included average drinking frequency, usual quantity, and binge drinking frequency over the past year. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to estimate odds ratios and 95% co… Show more

“…Alcohol consumption was associated with MetS, as in the previous study [ 30 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. In this study, the answers were divided into three categories: current alcohol drinkers, quitters and never drinkers; however, many previous studies have focused on the frequency of drinking and changes in the amount and quantity of alcohol consumed [ 36 , 37 , 38 ].…”

“…10 Some studies have discussed the association between metabolic diseases and the consumption of alcohol, showing that drinking alcohol was correlated with blood pressure, glucose metabolism and triglyceride concentration. [11][12][13][14] Considering the widespread alcohol consumption in the world, some clinicians' review of dietary advice for patients with gout and HUA shows that the most general advice is to completely restrict or avoid alcohol intake, in which this suggested frequency is usually beyond the weight loss. 15 In the previous research, 16 considering the type of drinking, beer seems to be the biggest risk factor, followed by spirits, while drinking wine only shows a slight increase in the incidence of gout, but it did not calculate the daily alcohol intake for different types of drinking.…”

“…According to a study conducted in 2015, the current drinking rate of alcohol use among Chinese adults (aged 18 years and above) was 41.3% 10. Some studies have discussed the association between metabolic diseases and the consumption of alcohol, showing that drinking alcohol was correlated with blood pressure, glucose metabolism and triglyceride concentration 11–14. Considering the widespread alcohol consumption in the world, some clinicians' review of dietary advice for patients with gout and HUA shows that the most general advice is to completely restrict or avoid alcohol intake, in which this suggested frequency is usually beyond the weight loss 15.…”

“…Although heavy alcohol drinking increases the risk of serious health problems including cardiovascular disease (CVD) [ 1 ], cancer [ 2 ], cirrhosis of the liver [ 3 ], chronic pancreatitis [ 3 ], and cardiometabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia [ 4 ], light-to-moderate alcohol drinking has been associated with decreased risk of CVD such as stroke [ 5 , 6 ] and myocardial infarction [ 7 , 8 ]. Many studies have shown that moderate alcohol consumption elevates serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration, one of the sources of the cardioprotective effect associated with alcohol consumption [ 9 ].…”
