Association of Alcohol Misuse With Sexual Identity and Sexual Behavior in Women Veterans

Abstract: In this online study of women veterans, younger sexual minority women were more likely to screen positive for alcohol misuse, and they had more severe alcohol misuse, than their heterosexual counterparts. Prevention and treatment efforts focused specifically on sexual minority women veterans may be needed.

“…Independent of race/ethnicity, sexual minority women reported greater unhealthy alcohol use than heterosexual women. Sexual minority women's greater risk for problematic alcohol use, including increased rates of risky drinking and more negative consequences of drinking, is a consistent finding in the literature (Burgard, Cochran, & Mays, 2005;Institute of Medicine, 2011;Wilsnack et al, 2008), including among women veterans (Le-havot, Williams, Millard, Bradley, & Simpson, 2016;Mattocks et al, 2013). Our results further highlight that this is the case across racial/ethnic groups among sexual minority women veterans.…”

[3] The included studies stem from a small number of different countries where the political and societal development for LGB people is much different from other regions. Thus, the generalizability of the presented findings might be limited to parts of the global West.…”

“…People who belong to any kind of minority group suffer from unique stress related to their marginalization, including discrimination, expectation of discrimination, and internalized stigma 1 . Applied to sexual minority people, this includes stressors of everyday discrimination (e.g., microaggressions), expectation of rejection, self‐devaluation because of internalized homophobia, the concealment of their identity (i.e., outness), and other forms of stigmatization 2‐4 . The various stressors potentially influencing the mental health of people with minority sexual identities are summarized in the minority stress model 5 .…”

“…Kerr et al 60 women, reporting that women with higher levels of minority stress were more likely to have worse drinking health outcomes. Lehavot et al 72 evaluated differences according to age in alcohol misuse across sexual orientation identity and sexual orientation behavior among 702 female veterans (36% lesbian/bisexual). sexual minority women, whether categorized by self-identity or sexual behavior, were more likely to screen positive for alcohol misuse (higher scores at the aUDit-c) than heterosexual women.…”
