Association of atrial fibrillation and gastroesophageal reflux disease: Natural and therapeutic linkage of the two common diseases

Abstract: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is popular in Japan. The two common diseases share several predisposing factors such as lifestyle and senescence, and inflammation and oxidative stress play an important role in their development and progression. Incidental cases of AF treated successfully by proton pump inhibitor (PPI) applied for coexisting GERD have been sporadically reported. An increasing evidence indicates that GERD induces the initiation and the p… Show more

“…The peri‐esophageal vagal afferent pathways have low response thresholds and are mostly involved in the physiologic effects . Local mild‐to‐moderate inflammation could trigger vagal afferent pathway and initiated cholinergic anti‐inflammatory pathways . Whilst not every sample in our study had mucosal rupture and autonomic nerve density was not different, the effect of acid reflux on shortening atrial ERP was eliminated consistently by atropine.…”

“…23,26,27 Local mild-to-moderate inflammation could trigger vagal afferent pathway and initiated cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathways. 28,29 Whilst not every sample in our study had mucosal rupture and autonomic nerve density was not different, the effect of acid reflux on shortening atrial ERP was eliminated consistently by atropine. This suggests that the effect of acid stimulation, especially in the acute stage, would be mediated mostly by vagal network.…”
