“…Another issue that should be taken into account is that tobacco consumption is one of the undeniable precancerous factors in the oral cavity, and although there is not a direct relationship to oral lichen planus, it is implicated in the degenerative process of oral precancerous lesions (Giagkou, Christodoulou, & Katsanos, ; López‐Jornet, Parra‐Perez, & Pons‐Fuster, ). The malignant transformation is also related to the lesion time of evolution and the patient's age.…”

“…1 A previous cross-sectional study demonstrated a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases among patients with LP when compared with healthy control subjects. 11 In that study, the comorbid state of LP patients and control subjects was determined by the presence of one of the following autoimmune diseases: SLE, Sj€ ogren's syndrome, RA, Graves' disease, Hashimoto's disease, alopecia areata, vitiligo, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, haemolytic anaemia, giant cell arteritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, chronic glomerulonephritis, systemic sclerosis, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic urticaria, psoriasis, Addison's disease, immune thrombocytopenia and coeliac disease. However, detailed analyses of the possible associations of LP with distinct autoimmune diseases have not been performed.…”

“…However, they have mostly been observed from case reports. Although a previous study has demonstrated a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases among patients with oral LP than among healthy control subjects, the population was small and detailed analyses of the possible associations with distinct autoimmune diseases were not performed. The purpose of this nationwide survey of a Taiwanese population was to clarify the associations of LP with various autoimmune diseases.…”

“…Although the etiology of OLP remains uncertain, there have been reports that described many systemic disorders linked to OLP such as metabolic syndrome [25], mental disorders [26], immune disease [27,28] and viral infection [29]. The association of these pathologies with OLP appears to depend upon geographic factors [30].…”
