Association of cardiovascular disease risk factors with left ventricular mass, biventricular function, and the presence of silent myocardial infarction on cardiac MRI in an asymptomatic population

Abstract: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the relationship between risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiac mass and function on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and to investigate possible risk factors for silent myocardial infarction (SMI) in an asymptomatic Asian population. We included 647 asymptomatic subjects (485 males, mean age 54.8 ± 6.7 years; 162 females, mean age 55.2 ± 7.6 years) who underwent 1.5-T cardiac MRI during a health checkup. The association between biventricu… Show more

“…Although the study was not designed for this purpose, no significant effect of occasional smoking on cardiac structure and function was found. In our study, tobacco smoking was not associated with increased LV mass, which was observed in several previous studies [5][6][7]10 . A possible reason could be that LV hypertrophy has a very multifactorial etiology (e.g.…”

“…Previous studies reporting on the effects of tobacco smoking on cardiac structure and function have shown contradictory results [5][6][7][8][9][10] . Most studies observed an association between tobacco smoking and reduced systolic function and increased LV mass.…”

“…Measuring the LV mass and functional LV parameters plays an important role in both the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and in the subsequent therapeutic determinations ( 17 ). Echocardiography has been extensively used in clinical practice as a primary, non-invasive tool to determine the functional LV parameters.…”

“…In a series of 647 asymptomatic subjects, Nham et al [27] found that silent myocardial infarction was not independently associated with ventricular mass, geometry and function, whereas it was associated with diabetes mellitus. The feasibility of three dimensional fusion of electromechanical mapping and LGE CMR for real-time intramyocardial cell injections in a porcine model was established [28].…”
