Association of Cognitive Function and Risk for Elder Abuse in a Community-Dwelling Population

Abstract: Aim: This study aimed to examine the cross-sectional association between cognitive function and elder abuse. Methods: The Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP) is a population-based study conducted in a geographically defined community (n = 8,932). We identified 238 CHAP participants who had elder abuse reported to a social services agency. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (perceptual speed), and both immediate and delayed recall… Show more

“…8, 24 Lower levels of cognitive function were associated with increased risk for elder abuse 28,29,30 and self-neglect 31 in both crosssectional and prospective studies. 32 In addition, older adults with dementia may experience a higher burden of chronic illness and physical impairment, which further increases their risk of abuse, compared to older adults without dementia.…”

“…The reason for this is that the elderly would be doubly exposed to conditions of abuse, because he/she is inserted in a context that signals the loss of autonomy and independence. (16,(21)(22)(23) In another study, the decrease of functional capacity among the elderly was associated with episodes of financial and emotional abuse. (12) New models of multilevel logistic regression needs to be tested to reveal possible effects between other variables.…”

“…Studies have also focused on factors related to mental status. APS clients were more likely than control or comparison groups to have poor executive function performance (Schillerstrom, Salazar, Regwan, Bonugli, & Royall, 2009) and poor cognition, memory, and processing speed (Dong, Simon, Rajan, & Evans, 2011).…”
