Association of Guillain-Barre Syndrome With COVID-19: A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: There is growing evidence of neurological involvement in patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), suggesting that Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) can also occur with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) as a neurological complication. Herein, we describe a unique case of a 45-year-old male who manifested with sudden onset progressive symmetric ascending paralysis leading to quadriplegia one week after developing fever, cough, and dyspnea. On examination, he had areflexia in lower … Show more

“…COVID-19 generally presents with signs and symptoms of the respiratory system, including flu-like illness complicated by acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and lung failure [2]. Other manifestations and complications include severe metabolic syndrome, acute kidney injury, neurological syndromes, cardiovascular and thromboembolic events such as encephalopathy, seizures, and stroke [3][4][5][6][7]. A possible association between COVID-19 and autoimmune disease has also been reported in many case reports [8].…”

“…From asymptomatic infection to respiratory failure, multi-organ dysfunction, and death, the COVID-19 has a wide spectrum of clinical presentations [33]. COVID-19 has been linked to harmful effects on other body systems in addition to the respiratory system [34][35][36][37][38]. Although SARS-CoV-2 has a lower mortality rate in comparison with SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, the transmissibility and spread are much higher than SARS-CoV-1 and MERS.…”

“…COVID-19 has a typical manifestation of the respiratory system and generally presents with fever, cough, dyspnea, and fatigue. COVID-19 has also demonstrated signs and symptoms in the gastrointestinal (GI) system, cardiovascular system, and neurological system [4][5][6][7]. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea have also been reported as an initial manifestation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) [8].…”
