Association of Helicobacter pylori babA2 gene and gastric cancer risk: a meta-analysis

Abstract: Background: The association of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) babA2 gene with gastric cancer (GC) was reported by several studies, but results were inconsistent. This meta-analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between H. pylori babA2 gene and GC risk. Methods: Case-control studies involving the association between H. pylori babA2 gene and GC risk were systematically identified from PubMed databases. A meta-analysis was used to pool studies and to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence… Show more

“…The East Asian type of H. pylori , which is popular in Japan, is more carcinogenic than the European-type H. pylori [ 38 , 39 ]. In addition, the presence of H. pylori with a positive babA2 gene may contribute to an increased risk of GC, especially in the Asian population [ 39 , 40 ]. In Japan, the eradication treatment for gastric and duodenal ulcers was covered by the National Health Insurance in 2000, and H. pylori -infected gastritis was added as an indication in 2013 [ 41 ].…”

“…The following examples of proof are provided: in addition, (a) cagW contains 6 transmembrane helices, which is similar to the VirB6 family members; (b) the amino acid content of the last predicted transmembrane helix in cagW is rich in valine/leucine/isoleucine, which is considered to be essential for VirB6 function; (c) both cagW and VirB6 contain a significant tryptophan residue within a conserved motif preceding the last predicted trans. As a result, it has been postulated that the cagW performs a role similar to that of the VirB6 protein (Chehelgerdi & Doosti, 2020 ; Kpoghomou et al, 2020 ; Martín-Núñez et al, 2020 ). Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are the most extensively studied pathogen recognition receptors (PRRs) (Khanmohammadi & Rezaei, 2021 ).…”

“…GC is a multifactorial disease caused by a combination of environmental factors and genetic changes [ 4 , 5 ]. Environmental risk factors for this disease include smoking [ 6 ], alcohol [ 7 ], high salt intake [ 8 ], nitrite and nitrate in some foods [ 9 ], including processed meats, high consumption of red meat smoked foods, low consumption of raw fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C and antioxidants [ 10 , 11 ], overweight and obesity [ 12 , 13 ], Helicobacter pylori [ 14 , 15 ] and low socioeconomic conditions [ 16 ], including low education and low income [ 17 19 ]. Approximately 90% of gastric cancers are adenocarcinomas.…”
