Association of Inflammatory and Noninflammatory Breast Cancer with Socioeconomic Characteristics in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database, 2000–2007

Abstract: Background Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and highly aggressive form of primary breast cancer. Little is known regarding risk factors for IBC, specifically the association with socioeconomic position (SEP). Methods The association between breast cancer type (IBC vs. non-IBC) with county-level SEP in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database for cases diagnosed from 2000–2007 was examined. County-level SEP characteristics included metropolitan vs. non- metropolitan residence, percen… Show more

“…SEER data are useful in identifying the disparity in cancer outcome and treatment used because SEER has different socioeconomic and outcome data (Ognjanovic et al, 2009;Sultan et al, 2009;Cheung et al, 2010;McDowell et al, 2010;Pappo et al, 2010;Bhatia, 2011;Perez et al, 2011) (Harlan et al, 1995;Shavers et al, 2003;Wampler et al, 2005;Gross et al, 2008;Lund et al, 2008;Downing et al, 2010;Martinez et al, 2010;Schlichting et al, 2012;Yao et al, 2012). In particular, SEER data have outcome and socio-economic data associated with bronchioaveolar lung cancer (Hasan et al, 2004;Saeed et al, 2012).…”

“…Two studies 5,20 suggest that low socioeconomic status is associated with higherIBC incidence, irrespective of a patient's age/race/ethnic group at diagnosis, and possibly associated with lower educational level and poor access to health services.…”

“…SEER data are used widely as a bench-mark data source for studying MB/PNET cancer outcomes in US and in other countries (Barnholtz-Sloan et al, 2005;Bishop et al, 2012;Curran et al, 2009;Deorah et al, 2006;Gatta et al, 2002;Halperin et al, 2004;Lai, 2008;Smoll, 2012). The extensive ground coverage by the SEER data is ideal for identifying the disparity in oncology outcome and treatment in different geographical and cultural areas (Cheung, 2013a(Cheung, , 2013b(Cheung, , 2013cCheung, 2012;Cheung, 2013;Downing et al, 2010;Gross et al, 2008;Harlan et al, 1995;Lund et al, 2008;Martinez et al, 2010;Martinez Min Rex Cheung Schlichting et al, 2012;Shavers et al, 2003;Wampler et al, 2005;Yao et al, 2012). In addition to the biological staging factors and the treatment factors, this database also contains a large number of county level socio-economic factors data.…”
