Association of laboratory parameters and genetic polymorphisms with ischemic stroke in Chinese Han population

Abstract: Numerous genetic polymorphisms and clinical laboratory parameters are associated with ischemic stroke (IS). However, the results of such studies have frequently been inconsistent. The aim of the present study was to evaluate associations between clinical laboratory parameters with genetic polymorphisms that influence the risk of IS in a Chinese Han population. Clinical laboratory parameters were measured by an automatic biochemical analyzer. Genotype and allele frequencies of the polymorphisms angiotensin-conv… Show more

“…Ischemic stroke (IS) is the loss of brain tissue caused by a cessation of blood supply to a region of the brain brought on by an obstruction of a carotid or vertebral artery, or distal branches of the anterior, middle, or posterior cerebral arteries ( 1 ). It is the primary cause of adult disability and the second-leading cause of mortality in the world, accounting for ~ 10% of all deaths with 5.5 million people dying annually ( 2 ).…”

“…Moreover, the I/D polymorphism was reported to show sexual dimorphism in young adults, with the DD genotype associated with higher maximal fat oxidation values than the ID/II genotype in men, and the ID/II genotype having higher maximal fat oxidation values in women [43]. In ischemic stroke patients, the ACE D allele was associated with high total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels, indicating a possible biomarker for early prevention [44]. In cardiovascular disease patients, the ACE I/I genotype and I allele were associated with increased circulating glucose levels and hence a 2-fold increased risk of diabetes [45].…”

“…3 In addition, high triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations are risk factors for IS. 4 FBG has also been reported to be significantly associated with the prognosis of IS. It is associated with 90-day mortality and a poor functional outcome 3 months after acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) in patients that are treated by mechanical thrombectomy.…”
