Association of low birth weight and placental malarial infection in Nigeria

Abstract: Background: Malaria causes significant morbidity and mortality among pregnant women in Nigeria. However, the contribution of malaria infection to neonatal development is incompletely understood. Here we determined the prevalence of placental malarial infection in six communities in Anambra State, Nigeria, between 2005 and 2006, and compare these data to neonatal birth weight. Methodology: Blood samples were obtained from the placenta of 500 parturient mothers and examined for the presence of malaria parasites.… Show more

“…2 A Nigerian study found a prevalence of 64% for placental malaria. 4 Placental malaria can lead to placental insufficiency. It is hypothesized that insufficiency is the consequence of a local release of inflammation mediators due to a placental inflammatory reaction to the infected erythrocytes.…”

“…Binding is mediated by VAR2CSA (variant surface antigen 2-chondroitin sulfate A), a variant antigen of the PfEMP1 family expressed on the surface of IE by the parasite (45,46). P. falciparum infections during pregnancy have been associated with maternal anemia and poor pregnancy outcomes, specifically, low birth weight babies (4,6,19,27,29). Low birth weight is a major cause of neonatal and infant mortality in both developed and developing countries (25,36,55) and may be associated with long-term health consequences (28,30,36,43).…”

“…Alguns estudos de freqüência na África indicam uma contribuição de 35% da malária para o BPN, que pode ser resultante de partos prematuros e restrição do crescimento intra-uterino (MCGREGOR, 1984;STEKTEE et al, 2001;ARIBODOR et al, 2009).…”
