Association of Maternal Stress and Social Support During Pregnancy With Growth Marks in Children’s Primary Tooth Enamel

Abstract: IMPORTANCEExposure to maternal psychosocial stressors during the prenatal and perinatal periods can have major long-term mental health consequences for children. However, valid and inexpensive biomarkers are currently unavailable to identify children who have been exposed to psychosocial stress and the buffers of stress exposure. “…A vast body of empirical evidence has been documented on the influence that social support has on the depressive symptoms that expectant women experience such as antenatal depression, postpartum depression, and subjective wellbeing amongst others (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21). In particular, women who experience a lack of social contact or connection with others, and also perceive themselves to have low social support, have increased susceptibility to anxiety and antenatal depression, particularly if they have a strained relationship with their partner or family, which can subsequently affect various developmental outcomes of their babies (2,(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30).…”

“…Given these challenges, there is a need for strategies and measures beyond self-report that can more reliably flag children’s exposure to adversity and direct interventions [ 27 , 31 ]. Biomarkers (short for biological markers) are physiological characteristics that can serve as signs of disease or other exposures [ 32 ].…”
