“…The number of cases in these studies ranged from 35 to 171. Two articles did not specify the number of controls (Fukuda et al, 2013; Lee et al, 2009; Smith et al, 2006). All of the studies used 1994 Fukuda criteria as the definition of CFS (Fukuda et al, 1994).…”

“…These mechanisms primarily included neurotransmitter dysregulation (five studies) (Fukuda et al, 2013; Narita et al, 2003; Smith et al, 2008, 2011; Sommerfeldt et al, 2011), hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis regulation (two studies) (Lee et al, 2009; Rajeevan et al, 2007), inflammatory/immunomodulatory responses (four studies) (Carlo-Stella et al, 2006, 2009; Rajeevan et al, 2015; Smith et al, 2005), and other mechanisms involving metabolism and endurance (one study) (Vladutiu and Natelson, 2004)…”

“…The available research however, does evince a role for these polymorphisms in various psychological traits. Certain alleles of TH polymorphisms that result in higher promoter activity and increased DA synthesis such as the T-allele for the C(-824)T single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the TH gene (Rao et al, 2007), have been associated with higher levels of persistence in psychiatric patients and higher levels of novelty seeking in healthy males (Fukuda et al, 2013;Sadahiro et al, 2010). These findings support the previously stated premise that higher DA activity can improve delay/effort tolerance during goal-directed behaviors (persistence) and attenuate the bias to select behavioral responses based on previous experiences (novelty-seeking).…”

“…Rs1077014, located upstream of TH in the proximal promoter, affects the transcriptional activity of the promoter and the catecholamine secretion in humans [34]. Rs1077014 may be associated with persistence, a typical personality trait in chronic fatigue syndrome patients [35] as well as with the personality trait of novelty seeking in healthy men [36]. To our knowledge rs10840491 and rs10840489 have not been ascribed any functionality or association with schizophrenia or other mental disorders.…”
