Association of Nonarteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Abstract: The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and its influence on second eye involvement is not well known. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of OSAS in patients with NAION and risk factors of second eye involvement. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In this cohort study, we examined 118 patients with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy referred to a tertiary care center from January 1, 2003, through December 31, 2010. “…Aptel published a cohort study looking at 89 patients diagnosed with NAION, who underwent polysomnography; 85 were followed for 3 years [98]. Of the cohort, 75% had OSA at diagnosis; they were more likely to develop NAION in their other eye (15.4 vs. 9.5%, 95%CI 0.2% to 11.5%, p = 0.04).…”

“…On the other hand, association between OSAS and sensory neuropathy, and nerve damage outside the UA [18,[25][26][27], type 2 or type 1A diabetic neuropathy, and axonal subtypes of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease [28][29][30][31] has been also demonstrated. Of particular interest is the epidemiological association between OSAS and anterior ischemic optic neuropathy [32] although a concluding rapport cannot be established [33].…”
