Association of polymorphisms in interleukin-8 gene with cancer risk: a meta-analysis of 22 case–control studies

Abstract: Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a kind of chemokine that plays an important role in the development and progression of many human malignancies. Previous studies have uncovered that polymorphisms in IL-8 is associated with the risk of many cancer types, but the results were inconsistent and inconclusive. In the present study, we aimed to explore the roles of IL-8 polymorphisms (rs2227307, rs2227306, +678T/C, rs1126647, and +1633C/T) and cancer risk through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Potential source of hete… Show more

“…A n a s s o c i a t i o n wa s f o u n d r e g a r d i n g t h e polymorphism in IL16 gene (rs11556218) and the risk factors hypertension and dyslipidemia. These results corroborate the data found by Chen et al, 7 with 300 patients with ACS who showed a significant association between the homozygous variant (GG) genotype and the hypertension, diabetic and smoker individuals. In addition, the study by Wu et al, 15 with 326 Chinese patients with ACS also found an association between the GG genotype and the disease in hypertensive, diabetic, smoker, obese and dyslipemic individuals.…”

“…5,6 This SNP has the ability to alter the transcriptional activity of the gene, contributing to the increase of IL-8 cytokine levels. [7][8][9] IL-16 is a pleiotropic and immunoregulatory proinflammatory cytokine. 10 Elevated levels of this cytokine were detected in patients with CAD.…”

“…This elevation in the level of IL-8 could be attributed to increases in infl ammation responses evident in newly diagnosed HIV patient. This research fi nding is consistent with the report of Robert, et al [17] and Kolacinski, et al [18]. Whose reported the there is a signifi cant increase in the level of IL-8, in the HIV infected meningitis and in the plasma of asymptomatic HIV-l infected individuals, although not in AIDS patients.…”

“…In partial agreement with our results, a meta-analysis has explored the roles of IL-8 rs2227306 SNP and cancer risk in 22 case-control studies; they identified a significant decrease of hepatocellular carcinoma risk with IL-8 rs2227306T/C polymorphism (OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.56-0.91, p 0.007 * ) [28]. is indicates the protective effect of T allele.…”
