Association of preoperative peripheral blood SOD and NLR with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the diagnostic value of preoperative superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peripheral blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Methods: The clinical data of 96 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (laryngeal carcinoma group), 68 cases of vocal cord leukoplakia(laryngeal precancerous lesion group) and 209 cases of vocal cord polyps (vocal cord polyp group) treated surgically at the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical College from 2018.01.01 to 2022.12.30 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The differences in peripheral blood NLR and SOD were compared between the groups, and the value of these indicators in the diagnosis of laryngeal cancer was evaluated by applying the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve. The differences were statistically significant (all P<0.05). The areas under the ROC curves of SOD and NLR were 0.892, 0.670 and 0.737 for the differentiation of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and vocal cord polyps, respectively. We found that NLR was not associated with lymph node metastasis. SOD was associated with TNM stage of laryngeal cancer, but NLR was not. Conclusion: SOD and NLR are valuable for the diagnosis of laryngeal cancer, but not for the prediction of lymph node metastasis.
