Association of salivary alpha-amylase with anxiety and stress in nursing professionals

Abstract: Objective: to assess if changes in salivary alpha-amylase activity are associated with anxiety and stress among hospital nursing professionals and whether anxiety and stress are associated with sociodemographic, epidemiological, and occupational factors. Method: cross-sectional, quantitative study, carried out with 210 nursing professionals from a hospital. For data collection, we used a questionnaire to characterize workers, Beck’s Anxiety Inventory, Lipp’s Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults and samples an… Show more

“…Also, in Brazilian studies, salivary cortisol was obtained to evaluate stress among nurses with alternating shifts [42]. chromogranin A was obtained in saliva to evaluate anxiety among hospital nursing professionals [43], among others. Another way to obtain biomarker values is from hair, a less aggressive technique than venous punctures for sample collection, for instance.…”

“…Salivary alpha-amylase activity (sAA) is a surrogate marker of sympathetic nervous system activity in response to stress. Nurses with self-reported stress have been found to have more pronounced changes in sAA, and smoking and medication use strengthened this link [ 124 ]. Interestingly, job resources – defined as social support through the supervisor and job autonomy – seem to buffer the negative impact of job demand (i.e., emotional demands, interpersonal conflicts) on health, as manifested by a decreased sAA awakening response and lower serum IL-6 levels [ 125 , 126 ].…”

“…A fase de resistência encontra-se com maior prevalência em grande parte das pesquisas, a exemplo do estudo de Santos et al (2021), que evidenciam como sintoma físico e psicológico o cansaço e irritabilidade excessiva respectivamente, em conformidade com os achados 17 . A fase de exaustão apresentou maior prevalência de sintomas psicológicos, onde é possível denotar um maior dano aos indivíduos.…”
