Association of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Use After Intracerebral Hemorrhage With Hemorrhage Recurrence and Depression Severity

Abstract: IMPORTANCESelective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely used to treat poststroke depression but are associated with increased incidence of first-ever intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the general population. The decision to treat ICH survivors with SSRIs must therefore balance potential risks of ICH recurrence with presumed benefits on depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE To determine whether SSRI use among survivors of primary ICH was associated with ICH recurrence and decreased severity of depressive … Show more

“…Cognitive decline and depression onset are both associated with poor long-term functional outcomes following stroke in general, and ICH in particular [4][5][6][7][8]. Multiple studies, including from our group, also clarified that cognitive decline and depressive symptoms often overlap among ICH survivors [3,9].…”

“…The PSD clinical medication guidelines lack high-quality evidence-based support, which makes it difficult for clinicians to determine the medication regimen [9]. In addition, first-line antidepressant exposure after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with increasing risk of recurrent hemorrhagic stroke [10]. Therefore, more patients prefer to use complementary and alternative therapies for PSD [11].…”
