Association of Serotonin Receptors with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders in childhood, with a high heritability about 60% to 90%. Serotonin is a monoamine neurotransmitter. Numerous studies have reported the association between the serotonin receptor family (5-HTR) gene polymorphisms and ADHD, but the results are still controversial. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis of the association between 5-HTR1B, 5-HTR2A, and 5-HTR2C genetic variants and ADHD. The results showed that the 861G … Show more

“…It has been well documented that dysfunctions in serotonergic neurotransmission are involved in numerous mental and behavioral disorders (Dell’Osso, Carmassi, Mucci, & Marazziti, ; Hou et al, ; Zmudzka, Salaciak, Sapa, & Pytka, ). The mitochondrial enzyme monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) subtype catalyzes the degradation process of various monoamine neurotransmitters and plays a key role in the metabolism of serotonin.…”

“…Furthermore, attentional problems were seen when exposed to Triptans, a 5-HT 1B/1D receptor agonist. Indeed, genetic mutations within these receptors have been associated with the risk of ADHD [302,303].…”

“…ADHD is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder. Recent research has shown that, apart from changes in central nervous dopaminergic activity as well as other neurotransmitter systems (1) the underlying neurobiology of ADHD as a disorder is also subject to changes in 5-HT neurotransmission (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Research on the role of the amino acid (AA) tryptophan (TRP, the physiological precursor of 5-HT) and related brain 5-HT synthesis) have used acute tryptophan depletion (ATD).…”
