“…The study on a nonclinical Japanese population found the l/l genotype to be more frequent among participants with abnormal eating attitudes and behavior. 37 Since there are differences in genotype frequencies between Caucasian and Asian populations, the latter possessing the l/l genotype less frequently, 38 these results are not directly comparable with the present ones. However, recently Monteleone et al reported that both the l/l genotype and the presence of the l-allele of the 5-HTTLPR to be more frequent in Caucasian women with binge-eating disorder.…”

“…25,27 The paper by Lauzurica et al had provided genetic data of a subset of patients who had history of AN episode; therefore, these patients were categorized as both AN and BN groups. 31 Two studies were excluded because they had examined abnormal eating behaviors in nonclinical samples, 34 or binge ED, 35 not in patients with AN or BN. A few studies examining the association between EDs and 5-HTTLPR were excluded because they were not in case-control design.…”
“…Of these 24 articles, two were excluded because were reviews, 9,10 one was excluded because was performed on nonclinical samples, 15 five were excluded because were performed on overlapping samples [16][17][18][19][20] and one was excluded because no 5-HTTLPR genotypic frequencies were given for patients 21 (see Fig. 1 for the flow diagram).…”
To be carrier of the 5-HTTLPR S allele seem to represent a risk factor for eating disorders, especially for AN. However, considering the reported high between-study heterogeneity, future studies should focus on more homogeneous endophenotype.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
