Association of Statin Exposure With Histologically Confirmed Idiopathic Inflammatory Myositis in an Australian Population

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Statin medications are widely prescribed for cardiovascular risk reduction. Myalgia and rhabdomyolysis are well-recognized adverse effects of statins, and they resolve with the cessation of statin therapy. Idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM) is a heterogeneous group of autoimmune myopathies that may also be associated with statin use. Recently, statin-associated autoimmune myopathy has been recognized as a distinct entity with the presence of specific autoantibodies against hydroxymethylglutaryl-… Show more

“…Moreover, the efficacy of statin to prevent cardiovascular events outweighs the overall rare adverse effects. [10][11][12][13] Glia is a term derived from a Greek word meaning to glue or to stick together. Glial cells or neuroglia are the nonneuronal cells in the CNS, including astroglia, oligodendroglia, and microglia.…”

“…Despite of the therapeutic effects of statins, they have also potential adverse and side effects including increasing the risk of diabetes mellitus (except pitavastatin), myopathy/myalgia (most frequent side effect with documented rates from 1 to 10%), rhabdomyolysis (documented rates of 0.1%), hepatotoxicity, cataracts, increase the liver enzymes and statin‐related cognitive impairment. “…Exposure to statins was found in 30.3% of PM and in 17.4% of DM, thereby highlighting an almost 2-fold increased likelihood compared with controls. However, details on the type of statin, dosage, or duration of statin exposure was not available in this study [58].…”

“…However, the markedly positive anti-HMGCR antibodies and the pauci-immune necrosis on histology were most consistent with IMNM. Since IMNM has been associated with statin exposure, the inciting trigger of our patient’s illness was most likely the atorvastatin he was taking for his coronary artery disease 7…”
