“…Previous in vitro studies have shown that HMOs protect against uropathogenic Escherichia coli invasion and cytotoxicity [40] or induce growth defects in GBS [41], both common uropathogens associated with UTI. A study showed that negative secretor status was associated with higher incidence of UTI in pregnant women [42], indicating that secretor active structures in the urothelial site might protect from UTI. This seems partially contradictory to our finding that positive secretor status was associated with increased bacterial load in the urine, correlating with an increase of Gardnerella and Ureaplasma signatures.…”
