“…The use of "tuibur" was associated with an increased OR of H pylori infection (OR: 3.32; 95% Cl, 1.95‐5.83). The habit of "tuibur" consumption may be a contributing factor to the high prevalence of H pylori infection and gastritis among the Mizo population 22 …”

“…It may be possible that betel nut chewing can alter the oral and gastric PH, affect the colonization of normal flora and decreases saliva secretion, thereby causing the local bactericidal effect of the oral cavity weaker and significantly increasing the risk of H. pylori infection [ 22 ]. In our study, betel nut chewing was not found to be correlated with the failure of H. pylori eradication in both groups.…”

“…Prior investigations conducted within Mizoram have revealed a heightened risk (OR > 1) of Gastric Cancer among tuibur users, with a noteworthy correlation (OR > 1) between Helicobacter pylori infection (a bacterium linked to gastritis and Stomach cancer) and the consumption of tuibur and smoked food, including “sa-um”. 38 , 40 Moreover, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables are well-recognized risk factors for distinct subtypes of Gastric Cancer. 41 The prevailing rates of Stomach cancer and H. pylori infection, coupled with their connection to specific lifestyle practices within the Mizo population, imply the presence of distinct population-specific lifestyle and demographic factors that warrant thorough investigation to effectively tackle the disease.…”
