Association of Vegetable Intake with Urinary 6-Sulfatoxymelatonin Level

Abstract: Melatonin is present in plants consumed as vegetables; however, only a limited number of vegetables have been tested for melatonin. The antiproliferative, antioxidative, and immunostimulatory effects of melatonin have been reported from laboratory studies. The potential protective effects of vegetable against cancer and cardiovascular disease may be partially attributable to an increased melatonin intake from vegetables. As a first step to test this hypothesis, we evaluated whether vegetable intake is associat… Show more

“…Whilst a genome-wide association study from the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study discovered single nucleotide polymorphisms concerning the melatonin receptor expression, an association with variable susceptibility to BC may correspond to different phenotypes within a population of the same racial origin [51]. Consequently, results and dynamics of melatonin concentration from Chinese cohorts [47] need to be interpreted with respect to epigenetic modifications, menopausal status, and dietary as well as environmental variables such as sleep deprivation and compromised immune function [52][53][54].…”

“…The study period for each component study was predetermined. The present study included subpopulations in a component study conducted between June and December 2000 that included blood and morning urine collection (14). A total of 432 women who were free of breast cancer agreed to participate in the present study (response rate was 68.5%).…”

“…It has been measured as increased blood concentration or heightened amounts of excreted urinary 6-SMT after the ingestion of melatonin-containing products, such as vegetables or barley-based beer (43, 44). Even some dose dependency has been noticed – the mean urinary 6-SMT was 16% higher in Japanese women within the highest quartile of vegetable intake compared to those with the lowest intake (45). However, vegetables and grain products contain large amounts of vitamins and minerals.…”
