Association of Vegetarian and Vegan Diets with Cardiovascular Health: An Umbrella Review of Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies and Randomized Trials

Honoria Ocagli,
Giacomo Berti,
Davide Rango
et al.

Abstract: Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are leading global causes of mortality. Unhealthy diets have been linked to an increased risk of CVD, while plant-based diets have shown potential protective effects. This umbrella review summarizes the evidence on the association between vegetarian diets and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Web of Science were consulted. Meta-analyses grouped by author and outcome were performed. The heterogeneity was… Show more

“…In a recent umbrella review of nine published meta-analyses, which included both observational and randomized controlled studies, researchers explored the impact of plant-based diets (vegetarian and vegan) on cardiovascular health. The study’s findings revealed a clear association between healthier dietary choices and a lower risk of cerebrovascular disease, CVD incidence, ischemic heart disease mortality, and ischemic stroke [ 103 ].…”

“…Plant-based diets, used by vegetarians and vegans, are associated with lower body mass index and lower levels of LDL-cholesterol and blood pressure, which leads to a reduced risk of ischemic heart disease and ischemic stroke [ 57 , 58 ]. Interestingly, some studies show that plant-based diets might increase the risk of stroke (particularly hemorrhagic stroke), with lower levels of vitamin D, B12, calcium, and iodine [ 57 , 59 ].…”

“…Amid this intricate landscape, a notable gap emerges within the current body of literature. Previous research has diligently examined the myriad factors that influence the adoption of vegan diets, encompassing health (Ocagli et al, 2023), environmental (Rabès et al, 2020) and ethical motivations (Ghaffari et al, 2022). However, what remains conspicuously absent is a holistic integration of these multifaceted factors into a unified theoretical framework.…”
