Associations between Depressive Symptomatology and Neurocognitive Impairment in HIV/AIDS

Abstract: Symptoms of depression are common (45%) in patients with HIV/AIDS and represent a substantial comorbidity associated with multiple risk factors. Our results suggest that past or present immunosuppression and HAND are not linked to DS. In contrast, sleep quality and HQoL are important variables to consider in screening for mood disturbances among patients with HIV/AIDS and distinguishing them from neurocognitive impairments.

“…[4567] Depression is reported in up to 45% of HIV/AIDS patients. [8] Bhargav et al . [9] have reported that yoga could promote the health of HIV-infected mothers, enhance the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in preventing vertical progression of HIV (mother-to-child transmission of HIV), and help reduce ART-related side effects.…”

“…Pre-HIV history of substance use, depressive, or bipolar disorder is common in patients with HIV disease and can increase risk of HAND (Atkinson et al, 2009;Weber et al, 2013). These findings are particularly relevant for older PLWH, as depressive disorders in this group may directly lead to impaired function irrespective of separately diagnosed neurocognitive disorders and can complicate the management of neurocognitive disorders (Owora, 2018;Tymchuk et al, 2018;Cross et al, 2013). In addition, in older patients, depressive disorders may primarily present with significant cognitive complaints, which can improve with antidepressant treatment.…”
