“…Researchers in Mexico have examined baseline data from an ongoing cohort study of a representative sample of adolescents for different factors that might be associated with being experimenters (having tried a cigarette one or two times) compared to being a regular smoker (having smoked in the past 30 days). The results of this cross-sectional study of Mexican adolescents found that depression, as measured by the Zung scale, was associated with smoking, but only for adolescents who were regular smokers, not with experimenting with tobacco use (Arillo-Santillan et al, 2005).
