Associations between obesity and ocular health in Spanish adults

Abstract: Introduction: Obesity has been associated with poor vascular health, but not in a Spanish population. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate associations between obesity and cataract, wearing glasses or contact lenses, and trouble seeing in a large representative sample of the Spanish adult population. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the Spanish National Health Survey 2017 were analyzed. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated and obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m 2. “…The prevalence of cataract, especially posterior sub-capsular cataract, is associated with high BMI. Obesity is related to insulin resistance, this can accelerate the formation of cataract [54][55] , and abdominal obesity is more relevant [56] . In developed countries, the risk of suffering from hyperglycemia and obesity is higher [57][58] .…”

“…A population group that has an especially high risk of developing obesity are people who have more barriers to physical activity, for example, those who have difficulties seeing, hearing or both. (3,4) Indeed, previous research has shown that people with difficulties seeing and with difficulties hearing carry out less physical activity than people without these difficulties, (5,6) and may, thus, be at higher risk of obesity. (3,(7)(8)(9) Sensory-impaired individuals may present a disinclination to leave the home because they might face several environmental barriers that may potentially reduce their physical activity due to fear of falls or other injuries.…”
