Associations of intrinsic capacity, fall risk and frailty in old inpatients

Shanshan Shen,
Yanhong Xie,
Xingkun Zeng
et al.

Abstract: IntroductionThis study explored the associations of intrinsic capacity (IC), fall risk, and frailty in geriatric inpatients.MethodsA total of 703 hospitalized patients aged 75 years or older were recruited for this retrospective observational study from Zhejiang Hospital using a comprehensive geriatric assessment. The IC composite score was constructed from the scores of the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination, Short Physical Performance Battery, Short Form Mini Nutritional Assessment, 15-item… Show more

“…Although several articles investigated a similar prediction question, they were not identical in methodology [ 43 , 47 , 48 , 51 ]. Jia et al [ 47 ] conducted the longitudinal cohort study using the 3-year transition (keep well, improved, worsened, and kept poor) of IC and found impaired vitality and locomotion were associated with worsened or kept frail.…”

“…In contrast, our study is a cross-sectional design. Shen et al [ 51 ] employed a cross-section study design similar to ours, but they defined each domain on a 0–2 score range to represent the functional status to predict frail risk and frailty. They found vision impairment increased the risk of frailty after adjusting for the related potential confounders; however, the presented study showed impaired vision is not a significant predictor for either IADL or frailty and has been excluded from the scoring algorithm.…”

“…Studies that address the occurrence of falls in the elderly in the context of the hospital environment indicates these events still require greater mobilization of care and management strategies to reduce their frequency, especially because the individual factors of senility associated with the fragility of structures hospital physical structures can result in irreparable damage to the physical and psychological health of this population [19,20].…”
