Associations of sense of coherence and self-efficacy with health status and disease severity in COPD

Abstract: Sense of coherence and self-efficacy has been found to affect health-related quality of life in chronic diseases. However, research on respiratory diseases is limited. Here we report findings on quality of life (QoL) of COPD patients and the associations with coherence and self-efficacy. This study consists of the Greek national branch of the UNLOCK study, with a sample of 257 COPD patients. Coherence and self-efficacy are positively inter-correlated (Pearson rho = 0.590, p < 0.001). They are negatively correl… Show more

“…The self‐efficacy of patients is an essential factor in the management of all these conditions. Previous studies have shown that patients with chronic diseases, who took more responsibility in the management of the disease, had better treatment adherence (Lee et al, 2014; Özkaptan & Kapucu, 2015; Tsiligianni et al, 2020). Accordingly, patients with higher self‐efficacy had greater self‐care ability and willingness to take responsibility for treatment and disease management.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the only study conducted to date that examined the influence of one's SoC on self-reported adherence to public health guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been shown that SoC impacts one's health status and chronic illness severity through its correlation with adherence to treatment guidelines: this mechanism has been described in people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) [47], Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) [48], and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) [49]. Our study confirms this finding in a population facing the threat of an illness rather than the illness itself: people with higher SoC were more likely to adhere to the national guidelines that were imposed in order to minimize the spread of the virus.…”

“…Health literacy is the ability of an individual to obtain, understand, evaluate, and use health information to make decisions regarding the treatment of illnesses and overall health, and to maintain and improve the quality of life [ 42 ]. Sense of coherence (SOC) is a personality trait that allows individuals to adapt to and cope with stress to promote their health [ 43 ]. Recently, it has been reported that health literacy and SOC influence the pathophysiology of chronic diseases [ 42 , 44 ].…”
