“…The literature does not provide any firm evidence for the existence of other risk factors. Diabetes has been considered, but no conclusive evidence has been found (Hatfield et al 1962;Bergren et al 1991;Moss et al 2001;Mitchell et al 2003;Fawzi et al 2005;Kim et al 2008) and the same goes for hypercholesterolaemia, arterial hypertension and hypercalcaemia (Khoshnevis et al 2019;Kim et al 2008). Spurious associations are likely to occur.…”

“…Asteroid hyalosis can significantly impair the clinical inspection of the fundus but, counterintuitively, has little or no impact on the patient's vision. When visual complaints are present, they have been associated with accumulation of asteroids in front of the fovea (Khoshnevis et al 2019). Asteroid hyalosis should not be confused with synchysis scintillans, which has a distinctly polychromatic angular appearance (Benson et al 1894).…”

“…This was not the case. In clinical practice, patients with a wide range of vitreous debris are seen, and often individuals with very substantial opacities can be essentially asymptomatic (as in asteroid hyalosis) 28 . Our result, as well as the wide variability in dysfunction among patients with similar vitreous opacities, suggests that the location and motion characteristics of the opacities may be more significant drivers than the level of opacity itself in the decision to seek symptomatic relief with surgery.…”

“…Asteroid hyalosis (AH) is a benign, degenerative condition of fatty calcium soap deposits in the vitreous that usually occurs unilaterally and typically occurs in men ages 75–86 14. Previous research has shown that these spherical asteroid bodies are composed of calcium and phosphate complexed with lipids and are usually asymptomatic 1,5. Asteroid bodies can be visualized by ophthalmoscope examination as well as B-mode ultrasonography, as this case demonstrates, with a shimmering, starry-night appearance to the vitreous.…”
