Asterosaponins Isolated from the Starfish Asterias amurensis

Abstract: -5a a-cholest-9(11)-en-23-one-3b b-yl sodium sulfate (3). In addition, the NMR data for known saponins 4-7 were completely assigned by extensive 2D-NMR analysis without chemical degradation.

“…Autotomy (i.e., found in Evasterias troschelii and Pycnopodia helianthoides), spines, modified tube feet called "pedicellaria," camouflage, quick locomotion, and shedding have been reported as physical defenses (Bryan et al 1997;Candia Carnevali and Bonasoro 2001). However, some species such as the sea star Pteraster tesselatus rely to a great extent on their mucus as chemical defense (Nance and Braithwaite Hwang et al (2011Hwang et al ( , 2014 Crude saponin Insecticide and repellant activity Park et al (2009) Asterosides A-D, glycoside B, asterosaponins n.d. “…In addition, 15,000 tons of starfish are landed with other valuable species every year and treated as costly industrial waste in Hokkaido. On the other hand, this starfish contains bioactive compounds, such as astaxanthin 10 , saponin 11 , and eicosapentaenoic acid-rich phosphatidylcholine 12 . In particular, it comprises higher GlcCer amounts 0.7 of wet internal organ weight 13 than plant sources 14,15 .…”
