Asthma mortality among Swedish children and young adults, a 10-year study

Abstract: Asthma mortality in children and young adults in Sweden decreased between 1994 and 2003. Food allergy and inadequate treatment were the major risk factors for such a death. Recognition and special care of patients with asthma who have shown signs of non-compliance, denial or severe food allergy must be encouraged.

“…Food allergy is commonly considered to be a risk factor for poor asthma control, and it may cause severe and even fatal asthma exacerbations, although food allergy in most studies has not been diagnosed with a double-blind-placebo-controlled food challenge [86,193]. However, it appears that not the food allergy per se but sensitisation to multiple foods and aeroallergens is a risk factor associated with poor asthma control or severe exacerbations [194][195][196].…”

“…Symptom perception, stress and other psychosocial issues Psychological risk factors are prominent in children and young adults who subsequently die of asthma [31,32]. Similarly, in near-fatal asthma episodes in children, the children also showed significant denial, psychosocial pathology and delay in seeking treatment [33].…”

“…Food allergy is commonly considered to be a risk factor for poor asthma control based on its association with severe and even fatal asthma exacerbations [49,50]. However, it should be realised that the diagnosis of food allergy was not based on the gold standard for food allergy, the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge, in any of these studies.…”
