Asymmetric impacts of natural gas consumption on renewable energy and economic growth in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates

Abstract: The globe is now in ecological turmoil as a result of the unrelenting increase in global warming. As a result, governments worldwide are committing to decarbonizing the environment, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) playing an important role in this effort. Hence, this paper evaluates the nonlinear (asymmetric) impact of natural gas consumption on renewable energy consumption and economic growth in the KSA and the UAE utilizing data stretching from 1990 to 2020. The stud… Show more

“…On the single country results, a number of these studies have attributed poor economic development performance of large resource-rich nations such as Nigeria (Olayungbo 2019;Shobande 2022) the Democratic Republic of Congo (Matti 2010;Yilanci et al 2022), Angola, Bolivia (Amundsen 2014;Andrade and Morales 2007) to the resource curse. However, some researchers have also found a positive impact of natural resources on growth (Alam et al 2022;Li et al 2022).…”

“…Similar carbon abating feedbacks are noted in terms of the Russia‐Ukraine conflict whereas FDI stimulates ecological footprint in China. Alam et al (2022) explores the novel nonlinear ARDL estimator to assess how renewable energy consumption and economic growth response to the positive and negative effects emanating from natural gas consumption in a time series model for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study relies on annual data from 1990 to 2020 with a particular on the intervening role of CO 2 emissions and trade openness.…”

“…The United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals prioritize addressing ecological degradation, highlighting the urgent need for environmental sustainability to achieve global sustainable development (Alam et al, 2022; Bilgili et al, 2021). However, numerous threats such as climate change and resource depletion pose significant challenges to the attainment of these goals (Liao et al, 2019; Liu, Khan, et al, 2022; Magazzino & Mele, 2022; Matar et al, 2023; Yang et al, 2023b; Usman et al, 2022).…”
