Asymptomatic and submicroscopic Plasmodium infections in an area before and during integrated vector control in Homa Bay, western Kenya

Abstract: Background Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been the primary vector control strategy until indoor residual spraying (IRS) was added in Homa Bay and Migori Counties in western Kenya. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of LLINs integrated with IRS on the prevalence of asymptomatic and submicroscopic Plasmodium infections in Homa Bay County. Methods A two-stage cluster sampling procedure was employed to enroll study part… Show more

“…Homa Bay (0°31′S, 34°27′E, 1,190 m a.s.l), in southern Homa Bay County, represents the Lake mesoendemic transmission level. Parasite prevalence in Homa Bay County was historically greater than 20%, but indoor residual spraying campaigns conducted by the Kenyan Ministry of Health and the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative since 2018 have reduced transmission significantly [ 22 , 23 ]. At all sites, P. falciparum is the primary malaria parasite species.…”

“…Vector control in the study area is done using ITNs and as of 2018 indoor residual spraying was introduced [ 27 ]. Significant progress in malaria reduction has been reported since the implementation of IRS [ 24 ].…”

“…Significant reductions in parasite prevalence have been reported in Homa Bay county, where malaria infections were previously above 20% [ 22 24 ]. The current control efforts using indoor residual spraying (IRS with an organophosphate insecticide) and long-lasting insecticide treated bed nets (LLIN) had significantly reduced malaria prevalence in the area.…”

“…The mean annual maximum temperature of the area is approximately 30 ℃ and the mean annual rainfall is around 1100 mm, with two rainy seasons. This area has been previously described in details by previous studies [ 12 , 18 20 ]. Briefly, the area has been modified by the construction of concrete-based irrigation canals to increase household food production.…”
