ATHENS, gateways, and portals: components of the Distributed National Electronic Resource

Abstract: The Distributed National Electronic Resource is a central plank of the UK's Joint Information Systems Committee's strategy. We outline the background and definitions of the DNER and discuss some of the issues to be investigated and the collaboration required between stakeholders and their partners.

“…To some extent, this problem, and the barrier it creates for users, is being solved by the transition from password control to Internet protocol (IP) control of electronic products, whereby address ranges or whole domains are registered with, for example, a publisher's electronic journals service. However, IP address checking also has its drawbacks:``anyone out of the office, or off-campus is denied access'' (Cox, 2000, p. 41) In response to this problem, which has particular relevance for distance learners, the ATHENS access management system was developed within the UK higher education community and enables a user to access multiple distributed data resources using a single username and password (Wise et al, 2000).…”

“…A number of libraries are developing Internet subject gateways and Place (2000) describes the work of IMesh and the DESIRE project. In the UK the Distributed National Electronic Resource forms the core of the UK's JISC strategy and has been described by Wise, Rusbridge and Wiseman (2000). A number of countries are developing gateways to health information resources for example in Canada, Denmark and the UK (Murray and Tomkins, 2000;Knudsen and Eika, 2000;Toth, Gray, Fraser and Ward, 2000).…”
