ATLAS: A language to specify traffic models using Cell-DEVS

Abstract: The ATLAS specification language is devoted to build models of city sections using microsimulation. The basic language constructions allow defining a static topology of the section to be studied. The dynamic behavior of the section can be modified by including traffic lights, traffic signs, etc. Once the urban section is outlined, models are converted into cell spaces and the traffic flow is automatically set up. Language constructions were mapped into DEVS and Cell-DEVS models that can be easily executed with… Show more

“…Over the years, various methods are used in traffic simulation [36] including agent based systems [13,1], queue models [20], cellular automata [14,35,33], DEVS [26,35,21] and Petri nets [32]. Besides, different commercial and freeware traffic simulation tools are available such as SUMO (Simulation of Urban Mobility) [25,2], AIMSUN [7], TRAN-SIMS (TRansportation ANalysis SIMulation System) [31], PARAMICS [6], VISSIM [15], and MATSim (Multi-Agent Transport Simulation) [27].…”

“…The first modeling choice concerns whether to represent the vehicles as inputs and outputs of some other models or represent them as models that have autonomous behavior. In the first case, the vehicles are represented as messages (or events) transmitted from one model (e.g., infrastructure) to another [50,51]. In the second case, they are models that can act on their own.…”

“…Modeling and simulation techniques, instead, have shown some success, and they have been gaining popularity in this field, as they allow the analysts to study particular problems using virtual experimentation (Wainer, 2006).…”
