Atmospheres of stillness in Bristol’s Bearpit

Abstract: This paper studies atmospheres of stillness in a contested urban public space known as the ‘Bearpit’. The purpose is to provide a nuanced account of stillness and its relationship to atmosphere. Drawing on an ethnographic examination of the Bearpit, the paper finds that the positive and beneficial aspects of stillness can be found in unexpected and unconventional places. However, there is no single, unifying experience of stillness, but rather a plurality of ‘stillings’. The paper highlights three forms of sti… Show more

“…For membranes to be used effectively in the GTR process, they must have biocompatibility characteristics, occlusive properties, capacity to maintain space, tissue integration and have easy clinical manageability [12,13]. The desirable characteristics of the membrane barriers used for guide bone regeneration therapy include biocompatibility to allow integration into host tissues without creating an inflammatory response, a degradation profile accompanying tissue neoformation, mechanical and physical properties sufficient to allow membrane installation and sufficient sustained force to not collapse and to perform the proper barrier role [14].…”

“…35 While these are helpful distinctions to analyse the subjectivity of experiences, and are certainly reflected in the responses of our research participants, the temporal relations that underpin these feelings are implied rather than elaborated upon. An exception is Buser's 36 work which provides a discussion of the benefits of paying attention to the temporal characteristics of atmospheres in processes of urban change. His study shows the changing atmospheres in a Bristol roundabout which transforms from a derelict and desolate place by the 1990s, associated with antisocial behaviour, to a vibrant a convivial space through the work of local community groups.…”

“…How then might we begin to better understand the affective dimensions of everyday life that might be experienced as a pause? That is, moments that are perhaps not passionate or intense, but instead are listless and still; the moments of inertia, flatness, impasse (see Anderson, on boredom; Bissell, ; Buser, ; Harrison, on stillness). Might these moments be so ordinary, so gradual, that we struggle to see them?…”
